i had mentioned that i’m lucky enough to be at a stage in life where picking up some of those boyhood dream cars has become a possibility. but for some reason my boyhood dream cars were the most complex [and likely to break, requiring massive repair bills] pieces of automotive manufacturing known to man.
So, against better judgement, i did this. I’m not a real big fan of red, but for some reason it just works here. and its getting harder and harder to find a decent 5-speed for a reasonable price.
this is when i went to test drive it. looking menacingly down on the car she’ll be replacing :(
unfortunately, the purchase didn’t include these sweet wheels.
on the way home, with the original manhole cover wheels.
i did have a set of turbo twists lying around that suit the car almost perfectly. :)
wish me luck.

Looks nice, does that mean you sold the Jag already?

no... but the jag has definitely lost her spot in the lineup.
if you do happen to know someone interested in a leaky jaguar that wouldn’t mind a little bit of a project, let me know. special oppopricing available. :) otherwise, she’s just going to take up a garage spot for the next 4-5 months. :(

I have a spare transmission for a Jag like that. I don’t have the time or space for another project car but if you have a price I can ask around.

i’d entertain offers around $2500, negotiable. she runs well. just leaks everything, requiring a lot of work to source and seal or replace the leaking part. on the highway, she’s still a dream, pulls so hard from 60mph and up. and without heavy traffic and august heat, the AC even works.
i’d probably also take a trade on a 500 or smaller motorbike. :)

So...what transmission does it have?

it’s an ‘89 S4 with a 5-speed. the 5-speed swayed me on the red. i otherwise prefer a more sedate color.
i had thought that by 89 all of the S4s only had automatics, and the GTs had the 5-speeds. but i guess i was wrong. but not being a GT, it doesn’t have the tightened suspension bits and shorter rear differential gearing.

At least according to wikipedia , the GT came out in February ’89, so there were manual ’89 S4s. ’90-’91 was when the S4 was auto-only and GT was manual-only.
I really love the 928, and for me the sweet spot is the ’89 GT, with the 5-speed S4 in second place. PSD was made standard starting in ’90 and while the active diff does make for more neutral handling than the mechanical LSD in the pre-’90 cars, the repair costs for PSD can be astronomical.
(BTW, you can check to see if you have the mechanical LSD by checking the build sticker for option code 220.)

me too on love for this car... since i was a little kid.
and i suppose youre leaving the somewhat unobtainable now GTS out of the picture. there’s a somewhat famous-in-the-community dark blue GTS 5 speed with 16k miles for sale now, asking 125k. $125,000!!!
i actually really do appreciate the quirky 70s styling of the OB bumpers (front AND especially rear). but for a car that i actually plan on driving a bit, i knew the old “buy the newest/best example you can afford” was important. the S4 with a 5 speed, and a bit more modern wheel/tire package was it. i’m actually really excited about this one.

I prefer the ’87-up bumpers and lights over the originals, but I’ve come to appreciate the originals as well. Of the pre-’87 versions, I like the ’85-’86 S with the lip spoilers the best.
I’m leaving out the GTS because of PSD. I wouldn’t want to mess with any PSD-equipped 928, even though I love the GTS fender flares.
Repairing the PSD
looks like too much hassle and expense.
This video makes the PSD look like it handles much better than the non-PSD cars, but I’m pretty sure the video is comparing PSD to an open differential and not a mechanical LSD.
The pre-’90 cars had an optional mechanical LSD, which was apparently better on the pre-’85 cars and not as good in the ’85-’89 cars, but you can upgrade those to the pre-’85 LSD .
The 928 versions I’d target are:
’89 GT
’87-’89 S4 5-speed w/ LSD
’86.5 S 5-speed w/ LSD
(The ’85-’86 S have an earlier version of the 5.0 liter 32v motor in the S4/GT that makes 288 hp instead of the 316 hp in the S4 and 326 hp in the GT. But they have dinky brakes. The ’86.5 S gets the big brakes from the S4.)
This is...far too much information.
